If you’ve ever looked at the ongoing rivalries of Rokugan and thought, “You know what this needs? More giant battles and slightly unhealthy levels of clan pride,” then we’ve got good news.
From August through October 2026, players around the world will be taking part in the Siege of Toshi Ranbo, a global organized play event for Gunsen: The Battle for Toshi Ranbo.
Working alongside the Legend of the Five Rings team, asmodee, Board Game Arena, and local game stores across the globe, we’re inviting players to pick a clan, play some games, and help determine who walks away with the glory, the bragging rights, and a collection of suitably clan-pride themed prizes.
And the battle actually starts before the battle starts… bear with us, it’ll make sense in a moment, we promise!

The First Skirmishes Begin on Board Game Arena
Before Gunsen arrives on store shelves, the fight for Toshi Ranbo will already be underway.
When Gunsen enters beta on Board Game Arena (currently planned for July 15th), players will be able to jump in and start playing online for free.
Every game played during this pre-release period will matter. Results from these games will be collected and used to establish the starting positions for the Siege when the organized play campaign officially begins.
If you participate during the siege, you can expect a small L5R-themed digital gift, so look out for an update from Board Game Arena on that.
So if you’ve ever wanted to influence the fate of Rokugan while sitting in your pajamas, this is your moment.

Then the Siege Moves to the Table
Once the campaign officially launches, games played in stores around the world will push the battle forward through the end of October 2026.
Each game contributes to your clan’s efforts as the struggle for Toshi Ranbo unfolds. The more your community plays, the more opportunities your clan has to gain ground.
Whether you’re a lifelong servant of the Crane, a loyal Lion, or simply someone who enjoys winning, every game helps shape the story.

My Store Didn’t Get an OP Kit. Can We Still Participate?
Absolutely.
While Organized Play kits are a fantastic way to support local events, a store does not need an OP kit to participate in the Siege of Toshi Ranbo.
If your local game store is running Gunsen events, those games can still contribute to the campaign and your clan’s standing.
The goal of the Siege is simple: get people playing games and having fun. If there are tables, players, and a healthy amount of clan loyalty involved, you’re already doing it right. Oh, and don’t forget to record those stats!
If you’re a retailer interested in participating and haven’t received a kit, reach out to your local asmodee representative for more information.

Got an OP Kit? Here Are a Few Ways to Use It.
Stores running events with an OP kit will receive participation prizes for everyone who joins the battle, along with a special Gunsen “battle fan” for the winner of each game. Because victory is nice, but victory with a prize is objectively nicer.
Each kit also includes a campaign poster that can be used to track your local clan victories. Winning Clans can claim their victories using the included fan stickers, or if your community prefers to save their stickers, a trusty pen or marker works just as well.
Once your battles have concluded, simply submit your results using the form provided by your distributor, and your community’s victories will be added to the wider Siege of Toshi Ranbo campaign.
Now how you get those games played is entirely up to you…

Chaos Mode: Run All Six Games at Once
Want to recreate the feeling of a battlefield erupting into chaos?
Gather thirty players, set up six tables, and let every clan fight simultaneously.
It’s loud. It’s dramatic. And it’ll make for an incredible rivalry-fueled atmosphere!
Run a Weekly Campaign Night
Not every community has thirty players ready to go on day one.
Run a single game each week and track the results as the Siege progresses. This approach gives players a reason to come back, recruit friends, and develop entirely reasonable levels of clan rivalry.

Let Players Organize Their Own Battles
Sometimes the best organized play is only slightly organized.
Encourage your community to schedule games whenever they can. Casual meetups, weekend gatherings, lunch breaks that somehow became much longer than intended… if people are playing Gunsen, they’re helping shape the Siege.
Mix and Match
Honestly, this is probably what most stores will do.
Run a big launch event. Follow it with weekly games. Sprinkle in some community-organized battles. The Siege is designed to be flexible enough to fit your local community rather than forcing your community to fit the event.

Where Can I Learn More?
We’ll be sharing updates throughout the campaign as the battle unfolds and the clans fight for control of Toshi Ranbo.
